Summer of '76

How do you come up with it?

Writing is an interesting occupation. There are writers blocks and at other times inspiration where you can’t possibly type fast enough.

A couple of weeks ago, I sat down to rewrite a chapter, expanding on it as I went. The process was fast and furious. As I typed, I could hear the conversation and surrounding sounds in the scene. I could see the events playing out. I felt what my characters were feeling. When I was done, I sat back, exhausted, feeling spent. But also pleased with what was in front of me on the screen. I had added in details that I never would have thought of a day earlier. They just came to me in the writing process, but ended up being so vital for making the scene feel genuine.

The last few days I’ve been traveling. I had hoped to have some time to write, but alas, time got hijacked by the events around me. I did have ideas crop up at the strangest times though. There is certainly thinking time when you drive down the Interstate at 70 miles per hour. When I had a chance (=not driving), I jotted down notes on my phone.

Most importantly, I solved a couple of plot points that have been stumping me for a while. As a result, I will have to rewrite a couple of chapters, but in the end the story will be much stronger.

I sincerely hope that when the novel is completed, all the writing efforts will help you be able to relate to the characters, sense their motivations, and connect with the locations and events, seeing slices of life instead of just text on a page.
